Situated on beautiful San Juan Island, KFHR is a public-use airport with one runway located just southwest of Friday Harbor’s town center. The FAA categorizes the airport as a non-hub primary commercial service facility and acts as a critical link between the San Juan Islands and the region.
According to the Port of Friday Harbor, the terminal accommodates over 10,000 passengers annually and provides services to the community, including passenger and freight transportation, general aviation services and emergency medical evacuations. Maintenance, fuel, flight instruction and casual dining are available on site.
In 1982, the Port purchased a small airfield built by island aviation pioneer Roy Franklin. As he related to Smithsonian Magazine, the airfield was originally “a cow pasture on a neighbor’s farm, ice-crusted in winter, unlit, and congested with mounds of dozing cattle.” With the assistance of grants from the Federal Aviation Administration, the Port built the airfield into a commercial service airport with airlines now providing service to Seattle, Bellingham, Anacortes and the other San Juan Islands from this aviation hub.
As Cessna Flyer puts it, “If you like tall trees, saltwater, clean air, wildlife, hiking, biking, sailing and an easy pace of life, it’s time to put ‘Flying into the San Juan Islands’ up near the top of your flying list.” Or as a recent review on aopa.org said, “Great location – runways, taxiways, and signage excellent. Easy walk to town.”
Fun fact: Friday Harbor is the default starting location in Microsoft Flight Simulator X.
